Tomorrow’s Workforce… Today Receives $1M Boost from The Synovus Foundation

February 16, 2007 - The first capital campaign benefiting Columbus Technical College is receiving its second $1 million investment in less than one month! The Synovus Foundation Chairman, Rep. Calvin Smyre, has announced a $1 million investment in the Tomorrow's Workforce... Today campaign. Steve Melton, President of Columbus Bank and Trust and Synovus Regional CEO, and Kathelen Amos, President of The Aflac Foundation, Inc., are co-chairing the campaign.

The contribution is an investment in providing educational and career opportunities for thousands of people in the Columbus area. Funds from Tomorrow's Workforce... Today will be used in the development of the River Road campus of Columbus Technical College. To date, Tomorrow's Workforce... Today has raised over $5 million.

"Columbus Technical College is thrilled and extremely grateful for this investment by the Synovus Foundation," said College President Bob Jones. "Receiving contributions like this from such well-recognized organizations reinforces the enthusiasm and drive Columbus Technical College has in providing well-trained, educated people for the Columbus area workforce. Our relationship has always been predicated on mutual interests and expectations of high quality work."

"Our contribution to the quality of education in this region continues our legacy of investing in the communities in which we live and work," said Richard Anthony, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Synovus. "Our goal of recruiting, training and promoting the best people in our industry is enhanced when we can look to our local educational institutions to produce talented and well-trained people who are ready to enter the workforce."

This announcement comes on the heels of more great news for Columbus Technical College; Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue is recommending in his 2007 - 2008 budget that $16.28 million be allocated for the design and construction of a new Health Sciences facility for the College. Columbus Technical College has turned away large numbers of qualified applicants from its Health Sciences programs because it does not have adequate classroom and lab space.
