Governor, State Officials Attend Groundbreaking CeremonyTuesday, May 20, 2008 will long be remembered as a vital day in the history of Columbus Technical College and this community. Ground was broken on what will be the Dr. Robert L. Wright, Jr. Health Sciences Center. Thanks to the generosity of the State of Georgia, Dr. Wright and his family and the Columbus community as a whole, Columbus Technical College's School of Health Sciences will soon be able to train and educate more than twice the number of health students that it can currently. Two years after the new facility is completed, the number of Columbus Technical College students pursuing careers in the healthcare industry will increase nearly 250 percent. The significance of today's ceremony and where it was held wasn't lost on the estimated 300 people in attendance. A large white tent and a pile of dirt with shovels stood on the property of a former carpet mill. Decades ago in Columbus, the textile industry and mills were king. Today, the future is in healthcare and other strategic, technologically-advanced industries. There are so many people to thank for making today possible. Overall, Columbus Technical College would like to extend its gratitude to those who never gave up the fight and who continually supported this project.
